On Stage: AI and Human Emotion
Exploring AI and Humanity: "Doctor Moloch" at the Unicorn Theatre
The Unicorn Theatre is currently showcasing "Doctor Moloch," a thought-provoking play by Carla Milarch that delves into the complex relationship between artificial intelligence and human emotion. Directed by Sidonie Garrett, the production features Chioma Anyanwu as Serena, a renowned actress enlisted to teach a humanoid AI doctor, portrayed by Logan Black, how to improve his patient interactions. While the AI's medical accuracy is impeccable, it struggles with bedside manner, prompting its creator, Mo (played by Alexander Salamat), to seek Serena's expertise in instilling genuine human empathy.
Set in a plausible near-future, "Doctor Moloch" addresses timely issues such as the ethical implications of AI in creative fields and the potential consequences of technology replicating human roles. The narrative resonates with current debates, especially in light of recent industry strikes concerning the use of AI-generated digital replicas.
The minimalist set design complements the play's futuristic theme, allowing the nuanced performances and engaging dialogue to take center stage. The chemistry between Anyanwu and Black brings depth to discussions about humanity, technology, and the essence of emotion.
"Doctor Moloch" runs through February 16 at the Unicorn Theatre, located at 3828 Main St. For more information and tickets, visit the Unicorn Theatre's website or call 816-531-7529.
