Beau Willimon Explores AI's Impact in New Play "East Is South"
Playwright and screenwriter Beau Willimon, renowned for creating House of Cards, is set to debut his latest theatrical work, "East Is South," at London's Hampstead Theatre from February 7 to March 15. The play delves into the complexities of artificial intelligence (AI), a subject Willimon has been intrigued by for over a decade.
"East Is South" centers on two coders, portrayed by Kaya Scodelario and Luke Treadaway, who are suspected of attempting to leak a powerful AI program named Logos. The narrative unfolds in an underground interrogation setting, blending elements of thriller and romance while probing themes of science, spirituality, and fear.
Reflecting on AI's rapid integration into daily life, Willimon acknowledges the vastness of the subject, stating, "I don't think anyone understands AI. Even the people who are building it. It's too vast a subject. But it's one that touches on almost everything else." thetimes.com
Beyond this play, Willimon has an extensive portfolio, including contributions to the Star Wars universe with the upcoming film Dawn of the Jedi and episodes of the acclaimed series Andor. He is also involved in the second season of Apple TV+'s Severance.
"East Is South" offers audiences a timely exploration of AI's potential to surpass human intelligence, prompting reflection on the evolving relationship between humanity and technology.
